Countdown for the volunteers of the 2012 London Olympics

Local news

Ferrovial Airports and BAA organized a training session in Madrid on Wednesday 28 March for the preselected volunteers to participate in voluntary work, which will be carried out at Heathrow Airport due to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

During the “Training Day”, the volunteers were accompanied by Cecilia MiravallesJuan Gómez and Laura Lacorne all from Ferrovial Aeropuertos.

The activities organized in the morning were directed to working in groups, as you can see in this video, allowing volunteers to interact and meet other team members, some who came from different parts of Spain and even from different parts of Europe for the meeting.

The youth carried out various activities that revealed certain values and skills, such as trust in the rest of the team, which the volunteers will have to develop during their stay in London to successfully carry out different actions, such as assisting athletes with certain types of physical, mental and sensory disabilities, during the Paralympic Games. The work to be carried out by the selected volunteers will vary according to the organization’s needs. The volunteers will support and assist VIPs and Athletes, give out information, coordinate the participants, control the luggage and sport equipment, and anything else considered necessary by the coordinators of the volunteers at the airport.

The volunteers also had the opportunity to learn more about activities and projects that Ferrovial carries out nationally and internationally, through a projection that does not leave any of the attendees indifferent. In the video you can also see how the youth was very surprised by the scope of the company’s activities, mostly unknown to them, and how motivation and enthusiasm were present throughout the day.

During the afternoon session, the BAA trainers, Joanne John, Manager of Recruitment, and Jennie Petterson, Training Manager, continued to give the training session, also dynamically, by showing various videos and holding workshops where the spirit of “Team Heathrow” and enthusiasm towards the countdown to the 2012 London Games were very much present.

Of the 110 preselected volunteers so far, 80 will be finally selected to assist the athletes, officials and spectators at the Olympics in their transit through Heathrow during the Olympic Games, 24 July to 12 August, and 20 young people will be in charge, between 29 August and 9 September, to help in the Paralympic Games.
